HARRISBURG - Forward Tom Mellor scored a franchise-record five goals and defender Val Teixeira notched the game-winner with 18.9 seconds remaining as the Harrisburg Heat defeated the Detroit Waza Flo 9-8 Saturday night at the Equine Arena.
Teixeira also had another goal as the Heat (3-3) beat the Waza (3-4) for the second time in three meetings this season in the Professional Arena Soccer League.
Mellor scored three of his goals in the first half, which ended with the teams tied at 5. He scored again in the third quarter to give the Heat a 6-5 lead and again early in the fourth quarter to briefly tie the score at 7.
Mellor’s five goals were one more than the single-game team record set last season and shared by Mellor and former Heat defender Christopher Williams.
The game against Detroit also doubled as a round of sixteen Open Cup match -- after the Heat beat ReAL Harrisburg FC 9-3 Thursday night at Sports City. The Heat’s next Open Cup match is Saturday, December 28, at the Equine Arena.
Harrisburg next plays Sunday at Cleveland.
